Valley heat
Modesto is the largest city in Stanislaus County, with about 218,000 people, in the middle of the Central Valley between the Tuolumne and Stanislaus rivers. Summers are long, hot and dry, and nearby Turlock averages a July high above 100°F, with nearly 80 days a year at 90°F or more. Air conditioners here carry a heavy load for months at a stretch, so a tune-up before the heat arrives pays off. See AC tune-ups.
Fog, smoke and cool winters
Winters are cool and damp, with dense tule fog on many mornings, so most homes rely on a gas furnace or heat pump as well as AC. Summer and fall can bring wildfire smoke and poor air quality, which makes good filtration and a well-sealed duct system matter. Read wildfire smoke and your filter.
