Waterford at a glance
Waterford is the eighth-largest city in Stanislaus County, with 9,120 people at the 2020 census, on the Tuolumne River east of Modesto, at an elevation of about 161 feet. It's a short drive from Modesto, and many residents work or shop in the city.
What that means for your AC
Being closer to the Sierra foothills, Waterford tends to run a degree or two cooler than Modesto and Turlock, but summers are still hot and dry. Older homes may have evaporative coolers or wall units, and many owners are switching to central systems; see swamp cooler replacement. Older homes near the river may also have small window units in bedrooms that can be retired once a central system is installed.
River valley mornings
Low ground near the river can hold fog and cold air on winter mornings, so heating matters too. A heat pump or efficient furnace handles both seasons; see furnaces and heating.
Once called Bakersville
The town started out as Bakersville after 1849, but mail kept going astray to Bakersfield, so it had to change its name. Since the Tuolumne was crossed at Roberts Ferry, the town became Waterford. A trestle once carried steam trains over the river; today no railway runs through town. Smaller older homes here often have limited attic space, which affects where new ducts and equipment can go.
