Ceres at a glance
Ceres is a city of 49,302 people at the 2020 census, just south of Modesto along State Route 99 and north of Turlock. It's part of the Modesto metro area and named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, fitting for a town surrounded by orchards and farms.
What that means for your AC
Ceres has many single-storey homes from the 1970s through the 2000s, plus newer subdivisions. Plenty of them are on their second or third AC, often paired with an older gas furnace. Replacing both together, or switching to a heat pump, can make sense; see AC installation. Many households also run window units in back rooms, which is a sign the central system or ducts aren't reaching them.
Highway dust and farm fields
Homes near Route 99 and open farmland collect dust on outdoor coils faster. A coil cleaning in spring helps the system cope with summer heat; see AC tune-ups.
A town with history
The first non-native families arrived in 1867. Daniel Whitmore, considered the town's founder, built his home in 1870 at 2928 Fifth Street, and it still stands, restored by the city. Outlaws Chris Evans and John Sontag robbed trains here in the early 1890s. Each fall, the Christmas Tree Lane opening draws crowds. Older homes near downtown may have smaller ducts and wall furnaces that need upgrading to suit modern systems.
