Escalon at a glance

Escalon is a small city of 7,472 people at the 2020 census in San Joaquin County, just north of the Stanislaus County line, where State Highway 120 crosses the BNSF railroad. Its name is Spanish for "step," or stepping stones. It's a short drive from Modesto, and many residents work or shop in the city.

John Wheeler Jones crossed the plains in 1852 and pitched his tent where Escalon now stands, planting the first grain in the area and eventually owning 8,000 acres. He's said to have found the town's name in a book at the Stockton Free Library.
